Summer is a time of joy and adventure for our four-legged friends—walkies in the sunshine, splashing in the waves, lounging in the backyard. But as the temperature rises, so do the risks for our furry companions. Heatstroke is a serious concern for dogs, ranking alongside snake bites and tick paralysis as one of the top three dangers highlighted by our vet partners.
To help you and your dog enjoy the summer safely, the Bug & Bun team have compiled some simple but effective tips to keep your pup cool and comfortable, and of course smelling absolutely divine with our dog fragrances.
- Hydration is Key
Ensure your dog has access to fresh water at all times. Place water bowls both indoors and outdoors and remember to bring one along when traveling in the car. A hydrated dog is a happy, healthy dog!
- Cooling Mats for Instant Relief
Invest in a cooling mat—an easy and effective way for your dog to cool down after a romp in the sun. These mats provide a cool surface for them to lie on without the need for electricity or refrigeration.
- Supervised Water Play
A paddling pool can be a fantastic way to help your pup beat the heat, but always supervise! Splashing around in the water is not only cooling but also a great way to exercise, and act as a bath in between grooms.
- Cooling Coats and Collars
Cooling coats and collars are game changers for active dogs in summer. Soak them in water, wring out the excess, and pop them on your pup to help regulate their body temperature.
- Fun with Ice Treats
Ice treats are a lifesaver on hot days! Wee Bug’s personal favourite is peanut butter frozen in ice cubes, but you can experiment with low-sodium chicken broth, mashed fruit, or dog-safe yogurt for a refreshing snack.
- Portable Fans for Crate Comfort
If your dog sleeps in a crate or a room without air conditioning, a portable fan can make all the difference. Point it in their direction to help them stay cool while resting.
- Damp Cloths for Ground Comfort
Lay a damp cloth or towel on the ground to give your dog a cool, comfy place to relax. It’s a simple trick, but dogs love it!
- Adjust Walk Times
Plan walks for early mornings or evenings when the sun is low, and the pavement is cooler. Hot asphalt can burn your dog’s paws, and the midday heat can quickly lead to overheating.
Signs of Heatstroke to Watch Out For
Even with precautions, it's vital to recognize the signs of heatstroke in dogs:
- Heavy panting
- Excessive drooling
- Lethargy or confusion
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Bright red gums
If your dog shows any of these symptoms, act fast. Move them to a cool place, offer small amounts of water, and contact your vet immediately.
Summer is a wonderful time to make memories with your dog, but keeping them cool and safe ensures the fun never ends. Stay mindful, stay prepared, and enjoy the season with your fur baby!
And of course – at the end of the day you can apply a few spritzes of your favourite Bug & Bug fragrance to keep them smelling amazing, and spray around their crate, kennel, bedding and clothes.
